Memphis Housing Authority Phone: (901) 544-1150 The Memphis Housing Authority owns and manages housing for low and moderate-income families, elderly people, and people with disabilities. Residents pay no more than 30% of their income for the housing and a variety of services are available based on individual needs. MHA also administers Housing Choice Vouchers (formerly called Section 8 vouchers), which are used to pay for rent in housing in the private market. Addressing the needs of homeless people has been a top priority over the past decade. The Department administers a number of programs designed to assist low and very-low income individuals and families. Federal “Mainstream” Programs Include: The U.S. Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Services’ Food Stamp program The US Department of Labor’s Workforce Investment Act program, providing an orientation to services offered; updates on available jobs; computers for researching job opportunities and self-assessment of work interests; assistance with transportation to apply for jobs, and assistance with transportation until the client receives his/her first paycheck.
