Memphis Housing Authority Phone: (901) 544-1150 The Memphis Housing Authority owns and manages housing for low and moderate-income families, elderly people, and people with disabilities. Residents pay no more than 30% of their income for the housing and a variety of services are available based on individual needs. MHA also administers Housing Choice Vouchers (formerly called Section 8 vouchers), which are used to pay for rent in housing in the private market. It also assists local and national human service organizations in improving the quality of aid to people in need. Addressing the needs of homeless people has been a top priority over the past decade. The Department administers a number of programs designed to assist low and very-low income individuals and families. Federal “Mainstream” Programs Include: The U.S. Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Services’ Food Stamp program The US Department of Labor’s Workforce Investment Act program, providing an orientation to services offered; updates on available jobs; computers for researching job opportunities and self-assessment of work interests; assistance with transportation to apply for jobs, and assistance with transportation until the client receives his/her first paycheck.
